The obverse portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley was used on all UK circulated coinage from 1998 to 2014 and on many coins dated 2015. The new 2008 – 2015 £1 coins have no rim beading on either side.

The reverse designs in the floral symbols series by Timothy Noad show one of each of the four floral symbols of the countries of the United Kingdom. The two coins issued in 2014 show a thistle and bluebell for Scotland and for Northern Ireland a flax and shamrock.

This coin edge reads DECUS ET TUTAMEN (an ornament and safeguard).
