This coin was issued in 2020 to celebrate what would have been Rosalind Franklin’s 100th birthday. English chemist, Rosalind Franklin sits right at the very heart of the story of DNA. Her ground-breaking research and inspiring work ethic were central to the discovery of the helical structure of DNA. She becomes the second scientist to be celebrated in The Royal Mint’s Innovation in Science series, following the 2019 Stephen Hawking 50p.

The design of this coin, by David Knapton, features a depiction of her famous Photograph 51, which enabled her to discover the structure of DNA. Even more exciting, this 50p coin has been developed in partnership with King’s College London, where Franklin’s ground-breaking research was carried out.

The obverse features the 5th portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark.

This coin is new and in Superior Brilliant Uncirculated condition (BUNC). BUNC coins are minted to a higher standard than coins made for circulation.
