The release of the Snowman coins at Christmas time really have been putting a smile on our face over the past few years, but this time, it is James who is creating the smile. The image depicted on the 2021 Snowman 50p coin is from the scene where James (the young boy) has just finished building a snowman in his garden and is adding the final touch.

Such a heart-warming moment captured beautifully.

The Snowman story was first published in the UK in 1978 as a wordless picture book featuring exquisite, pencil illustrations which were hand drawn by Raymond Briggs. It tells the story of a young boy who builds a snowman that comes to life at the stroke of midnight, this is when their magical adventure begins.

Raymond Briggs was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2017 for this work as well as several other contributions to British literature.

The book was then made into an animated symphonic film for television which was directed by Dianne Jackson. The Snowman film, which features an appearance from David Bowie in the introduction, was first shown on TV on the 26th December 1982 and has been broadcast on Christmas Eve on Channel 4 every year ever since. Just like the Coca-Cola advert, The Snowman has become a part of Christmas tradition in many peoples houses.

This years Snowman coin was designed by Robin Shaw who is an award-winning animator and illustrator. Robin is also well known because of his beautifully hand-drawn work. As well as having worked as a director of animated commercials for 15 years, he has worked closely with Raymond Briggs on a number of different film projects.
